Frequently asked questions about the Napoli Sotterranea tour

Is this the official Napoli Sotterranea website?

No. Naples Underground Guide is an independent visitor guide. The tour from Piazza San Gaetano is run by the Associazione Napoli Sotterranea, whose official website is napolisotterranea.org. We are not the association and we do not run the tour. Tickets we feature are sold by our partner Tiqets.

How much does the tour cost?

According to the official FAQ, 18 € for adults, 15 € for ages 11 to 17, 10 € for ages 5 to 10, and free for ages 0 to 4.

What time are the tours?

The official page lists departures between about 10:00 and 18:00, in Italian and English, but writes the times unclearly (it is not obvious whether they are hourly or every two hours): confirm the exact time when you book. There is also a Thursday evening tour at 21:00 by booking only, for at least 10 people.

Do I need to book in advance?

Not for small groups, but it is required for other languages, large groups, Thursday evening and visits outside the fixed times. A reservation also avoids the queue at the door, which the official booking page says can last up to 90 minutes at peak times.

How long does the visit take?

About 1 hour for the main tour, plus about 20 minutes for the Greek-Roman theatre, according to the official FAQ. Tiqets lists 1 hour 30 minutes.

Is the Greek-Roman theatre included in the ticket?

We could not confirm it. The official FAQ describes the theatre as a visit of about 20 minutes, but the official booking page treats it as a separate reservation. Check the official site before you go.

How many steps are there? Is there a lift?

More than 120 steps down and the same number up. The official accessibility FAQ says 136, but another official FAQ says 121, so we say over 120. The steps are low and have handrails. There is no lift.

Is the tour accessible to wheelchairs or strollers?

No. The official FAQ says the stairs and narrow passages are not suitable for wheelchairs or walkers, and strollers are not allowed: they are left at the entrance. Contact the association before you come.

Is it suitable for people with claustrophobia?

The official FAQ says most of the spaces are wide. The one narrow tunnel, lit by candles, is optional and very short: anyone who prefers not to enter waits outside for about 10 minutes.

Can I take children?

Yes, the official site sees no contraindication, even for very small children. Candles are not given to children, and you can use a torch or your phone light. Strollers are not allowed.

Is it cold underground?

It is cooler than at street level. Secondary sources give figures between 15 and 22 °C, but we could not verify them. A light jacket is a common suggestion, even in summer.

Can I take photos or bring food?

Photos are allowed. Food is not allowed on the route, but a small bottle of water is.

Can I get a refund on my ticket?

The official site says reservations are not refundable in any case and cannot be changed. Tiqets shows no cancellation for the standard tour. Check the terms on the product page before booking.

Is this the same as the Galleria Borbonica or the tour in the Spanish Quarters?

No. They are different sites with different operators and different entrances. See our article on the other underground sites of Naples.
